Members of the Alabama Water Institute recently attended the 104th Annual American Meteorological Society Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting, held at the end of January, featured several presenters from NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology.
The goal of the 2024 meeting was to leverage society’s collective strengths so that communities can define the steps and scientific advances necessary to minimize the impacts of climate change and to engage policymakers and the public in these efforts.
Dr. Steven Burian, AWI’s director of science and CIROH executive director, highlighted CIROH’s strategy and practices to enhance research transition into operations.
Dr. Sepehr Karimiziarani, research software engineer for AWI, presented a community dataset for high-speed National Water Model data access.
There were also CIROH presentations from the Research Triangle Institute, Jupiter Intelligence, and the National Weather Service. “The annual AMS meeting was a great way for the AWI to interact with a variety of people from industry, academia and federal agencies,” said Lanna Nations, AWI’s director of education and outreach. “The busy exhibit hall gave us an avenue to talk to prospective students, faculty and industry leaders about the important work we are doing through CIROH, the Global Water Security Center and CONSERVE and how we can utilize the research of talented scientists to bridge the gap between research to operations.”
