Temimi Honored with CIROH R2O Award

During the recent annual Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology Science Meeting, Marouane Temimi, an associate professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology, received the CIROH Research to Operations (R2O) award, an achievement that spotlights the work of the consortium’s R2O team.

Temimi’s project focused on advancing research in cold regions hydrology to support the modeling and mapping of ice-induced flood inundation. The National Water Model typically simulates streamflow in northern watersheds without considering the effect of river ice. This is a factor which may degrade forecasts significantly, especially during ice breakup and onset periods. By utilizing an operational system for river ice mapping and monitoring, it is now increasingly possible to account for ice’s significant impact on streamflow in these watersheds.

“The award is certainly a great recognition for our team, and we are grateful for the support we have been receiving from CIROH and NOAA, the National Weather Service and the National Water Center,” said Temimi. “The award motivates us to continue the work to bring our research products to the operational level. The feedback received from the experts in NOAA has been instrumental in improving our products, and we are excited to see our river ice product being used in decision-making, especially during breakup periods when the risk of ice-induced flooding is higher.” To read more about Temimi’s work, click here.
