University of Alabama Water-R2O NRT students traveled across the Southeast to explore Hurricane Helene as a case study in operational hydrology. From flood forecasting and dam safety to emergency management and recovery, the study tour gave students a firsthand look at how water science supports real-world decisions and communities.
The CONSERVE Research Group highlighted how their nature-based watershed restoration work supports southeastern fish populations during the Southeastern Fishes Council’s annual meeting in Tuscaloosa. Students from across the region showed strong interest in CONSERVE’s rivercane projects and field survey opportunities, underscoring growing momentum for collaborative habitat and conservation research.

This summer, nine students participated in the AI for Operational Hydrology REU, a partnership between the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology and The University of Alabama Graduate School that focuses on applying artificial intelligence to water forecasting challenges.
